Who we are

Marker is an AI-assisted essay marking platform for GCSE English, operated from the United Kingdom. We are committed to protecting the privacy of students, teachers, and schools who use our platform.

What data we collect

  • Account data: email address, full name, role (student or teacher), school affiliation.
  • Essay submissions: the text of essays submitted for marking, stored securely in our UK/EU database.
  • Marking results: AI-generated feedback, band scores, AO scores, strengths and areas for development.
  • Usage data: number of essays marked, timestamps of submissions.

How we use your data

  • To provide the essay marking service.
  • To display feedback to students and results to teachers.
  • To generate whole-class diagnostic reports for teachers.
  • To monitor platform usage and prevent abuse.

AI processing and anonymisation

Before any essay text is sent to our AI provider (Anthropic), it is automatically anonymised. Student names, school names, teacher names, and other identifying information are removed and replaced with placeholders. Only anonymised essay text, the exam board, and the question are ever sent to Anthropic. Student identity never leaves our UK/EU servers.

Data storage and location

All data is stored in Supabase (EU West — London region). We do not transfer personal data outside the UK or European Economic Area, except for the anonymised essay text sent to Anthropic (US) as described above.

Data retention

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. You may request deletion of your account and associated data at any time by emailing us. Essay data is deleted within 30 days of an account deletion request.

Children's data (under 13)

Users under 13 must provide parental consent before using the platform. We collect parental consent records and do not process under-13 data without verified consent.
